House-Made Baked Beans

A savoury blend of black turtle and haricot beans simmered with bacon, onions, and Barker's Professional Tomato Base, enhanced with spices. Perfect for a breakfast menu or a side dish.

Ingredients
- 20 ml Vegetable oil
- 150 bacon, diced
- 1 onions, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 300 cooked black turtle beans
- 600 cooked haricot/cannellini beans
- 299 Barker's Professional Tomato Meal Base
- 300 ml Water
- 45 molasses
- 40 ml ml cider vinegar
- 1 Tbsp American mustard
- 10 ml Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp Cayenne pepper
- table salt
- freshly milled pepper
Method
- Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan.
- Add the bacon, onion and garlic. Lightly fry for 3 minutes.
- Add the beans, the Barker's Professional Tomato Meal Base, water, molasses, cider vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and cayenne pepper.
- Bring to the boil, then cover with a lid and simmer for 1 hour.
- Adjust the seasoning.
HANDY HINTS:
- To reduce time, use canned beans. Drain and rinse before adding. Use smoked bacon pieces to lift profile of beans to another level. Delicious with fried eggs and breakfast sausage. Also great for nachos.Remove the bacon for a vegetarian option.If molasses unavailable, swap out for 30g brown sugar.
